It’s almost vacation time for me, so I am trying to catch up on some posts before I head to Ocean City, MD. First, I have to give props to Birchbox’s customer service! I had a broken product (shit happens) and Birchbox was quick to respond and provide a tracking number for an exact replacement. THANK YOU, Birchbox for always having A+ customer service.
I am really excited to announce that Birchbox will be celebrating their 6th Birthday on September 15th! Happy Birthday Birchbox!! There will be special promotions and giveaways on that day. If you are thinking about subscribing, now would be the time, Birchbox has partnered with Milk Makeup for the month of September to bring us some exciting new products. I have been looking forward to more from Milk so I’m stoked!! If you are interested in all the exciting things going on in September then Subscribe here.
Every month Birchbox provides a curated box of beauty, grooming, and/or lifestyle samples for $10/month. You can either pick one sample each month or choose the curated box with all products chosen by the guest editor. They also have a point system that translates to cash for purchases online or at the Birchbox store. A beauty profile questionnaire is available to better suite your interests. I find that they do generally follow your profile answers. Birchbox tends to send higher end products so they rarely include full-size items. Birchbox can be purchased yearly or gifted. They have now added a build-your-own-box feature. You can subscribe to Birchbox here.
Birchbox August Theme: Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop
I opted for the sample choice this month and I chose R + Co Dry Shampoo
Avene: Cleanance Cleansing Gel for Face and Body in sample size | Full-size $20 USD.
What it is: A purifying cleanser, infused with French thermal spring water, to remove dirt without stripping the skin of natural oils.
Review: So far I’ve really been enjoying this cleanser. It has a mild but clean scent, gets very sudsy, and my face feels refreshed & clean afterward. My face felt less dry with this cleanser, but I still needed a moisturizer. It’s a keeper.
Davroe: Replenish Jojoba Creme Treatment in deluxe sample size | Full-size $29 USD.
What it is: A hair treatment made with jojoba oil, amino acids, and rice proteins to strengthen and rebuild your hair from the inside out.
Review: If you know me at all, you know I am not a fan of heavy-duty hair repair or conditioning products. This was no different. It smells really nice and it’s creamy, but it was a huge let down. My hair felt like it had a coating on it that somehow made it feel worse. My hair was just limp and lifeless and it was just way too heavy for my fine hair. Not a keeper.
Lollia by Margot Elena: Wish Eau de Parfum in super tiny sample | Full-size $50 USD.
What it is: A perfume with notes of warm vanilla bean, rice flower, and jasmine leaves.
Review: I really dislike this scent and I’m 100% sure it’s the vanilla bean. Vanilla is not a scent I cannot tolerate on my skin and mixed with flowers just makes the scent more intense. Not a keeper.
Manna Kadar Cosmetics: The Day Dream Palette in the shade Fantasy | Full-size palette $25 USD.
What it is: Fantasy is one shade in the Day Dream palette. It’s a rich pearlized texture and a multitasker. Although it’s called a shadow, it can be used as a highlighter or blush.
Review: As you can see, my Fantasy shadow came completely crumbled. I did open it and swatched as best as I could. From what I can tell, it’s a very pretty shimmery gold and looks like it would be amazing as a highlighter or eyeshadow. I reached out to Birchbox and I already have a tracking number for a new one. I am excited that Birchbox is replacing this because I’m pretty sure it’s a keeper.
R + Co: Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste in a sample size | Full-size $28 USD.
What it is: A dry shampoo formulated with Hawaiian volcanic ash to keep you scalp clean & balanced. Plus, zeolite powder absorbs excess oils.
Review: I chose this as my sample choice because I though it was innovative and different from any other dry shampoo that I have. I have to be honest, I cannot seem to get a good even layer of the product where I want it. I felt like I needed a lot to get the job done and that defeats the purpose. I have to play with the amounts and application a little more to make a final decision but it’s not looking too good.
August Birchbox Overall: Not one of my favorite months and in all honesty, I think they were gearing up for their Birthday month. The perfume sample was literally the tiniest sample I think I’ve ever received and it’s not really an expensive perfume so what is up with that? Manna Kadar…like I said shit happens and I place no blame on Birchbox and commend them for fixing the problem promptly. The cleansing gel is a winner for me and I will probably purchase the full-size. The Hair treatment was a total bomb and went right in the trash can. The dry shampoo paste was just weird, but I like to try new things and that I did this month. I would rate this box a 4/10.
What do you guys think of this Birchbox? Have you tried any of these brands? I would love to hear your experience. Give Me Some Lip!
