I’m sad to say that this is the last battle that will include both Ipsy and Birchbox. It’s been a year and it’s time to decide which to keep and which to cancel. After thinking long and hard I have come to a decision. This wasn’t easy considering both subscriptions are very different and only cost $10/mo.
Every month Birchbox provides a curated box of beauty, grooming, and/or lifestyle samples for $10/month. You can either pick 2/5 samples per month or choose a guest editor box with all products chosen by the guest editor. They also have a point system that translates to cash for purchases online or at the Birchbox store. A beauty profile questionnaire is available to better suite your interests. I find that they do generally follow your profile answers. Birchbox tends to send higher end products so they rarely include full-size items. Birchbox can be purchased yearly or gifted. They have now added a build-your-own-box feature. You can subscribe to Birchbox here.
Every month Ipsy provides 5 full-size or deluxe sample products in a cute little travel size makeup bag for $10/month. Ipsy focuses mostly on makeup with the occasional hair/skin products. They also provide a beauty quiz to tailor your needs. I’m not sure how much weight my answers hold with Ipsy. There is a wait list but they provide opportunities to skip it. Ipsy will send some drugstore brands but they include full-size items more frequently. It can be purchased yearly, but due to the wait list it cannot be gifted at this time. You can subscribe to Ipsy here.

tarte Cosmetics LipSurgence Lip Cream in Wonder deluxe size. Full-size $24 USD
Here is a swatch of tarte Wonder LipSurgence and Starlooks Rose Gold Shadow.
This month I was thoroughly impressed with Ipsy at first glance. Two full-size items and I was super exited for the rose gold shadow and it was a huge let down. I do love tarte’s LipSurgence and always have. The Luxie highlighter brush has come to be one of my Favs. I do not typically use nail polish but Irina is a shade I would wear if I did my own nails (but I suck at it). So far I’m liking the Skin&Co Serum but not enough to spend $70.
Birchbox was a total disappointment. Other than the beautiful box, the only item I liked was the Acure Pore Minimizing Scrub. The Whish Shaving Cream was awful. English Laundry & Au Naturale sample sizes were a joke and it’s in my profile that hair products are not for me so hair conditioner and foil packets? Just NO!!
Even though Ipsy stole the show this month and my review on Birchbox was harsh, I am cancelling Ipsy. Shocker, but I have 3 very good reasons; Birchbox has a much better point system (lots of freebies). Birchbox has a good mix of makeup & skin care, and drumroll please……I am off the wait list for Sephora Play!!! I’m so excited and because it’s similar to Ipsy, (I’m hoping much better), I don’t feel like I need both subscriptions.
Has anyone tried Birchbox or Ipsy? What do you think about April’s products? Anyone receive Sephora Play? I would love to hear your thoughts! Give Me Some Lip!!
