My one favorite things about the holiday season starting so early is that Sephora puts out their line of favorites around October and this is a must-have set for me every year! This is my fashionably late review on Sephora Favorites Superstars Limited Edition 2015. I wanted to give each product ample use for a good review (my reason for being late hehehe). I must admit that 2015’s Superstars had some products that took me by surprise and 7 full-size products! I will run down the list and give my thoughts on what is superstar worthy and what’s not.
The first thing I want to point out is that 2015’s Superstars set was more versatile than some of the previous sets. Last year there were some BB creams and other products that were skin type specific and didn’t work for everyone. This set definitely had products that were more universal to all skin tones/types. There were several products that I was excited about and just couldn’t justify spending the cash so this was a great way to see if they were worth the splurge. I purchased this set for $75 and the retail value is $207. Considering all the full-size items, the price is actually amazing. This is probably the item I get most excited about around the holidays.
You guys know by now that packaging is everything to me and I LOVED IT! This set came in a super sturdy and pretty gold rectangular box that I kept for storage.
“The ultimate beauty haul, this must-have set includes some of our best mascaras, eyeliners, eyeshadows, highlighters, and primers, along with the latest favorites. It’s the perfect gift for any beauty connoisseur, or treat yourself to this set for everything you need to highlight features, let eyes stand out, and create basic to sultry makeup looks.”
Smash box Photo Finish Primer Water 1 oz. travel size. Full Size $32
I know! Pricey for a primer water. I actually already owned this and used it all summer long and it did help when I was feeling sweaty or just needed to freshen up. I like to use this when I’m in a hurry or lazy and not feeling like spreading on a makeup primer evenly but I would still need a moisturizer afterward. In reality I didn’t feel like this was anything special in comparison to much cheaper water primers. It is not moisturizing at all, when it dries it’s gone just like a spritz of regular water would be. I so like the travel size, it’s convenient to have in my bag but I just can’t justify the price without moisture. This is NOT superstar worthy!
Make Up Forever Step 1 Skin Equalizer- Color Hydrating Primer 0.16 oz. Full-Size $37
MUFE came out with a line of face primers that are specific to each skin concern. They address 10 different skin concerns in this line. They included a universal hydration equalizing primer in this set. I really like it as a moisturizer. It glides on smooth and sinks in but I see no results as far as priming for makeup. I would do better saving money and using my regular facial lotion. I may decide to try another product in the range such as the color correcting primer cut I would ask for a sample first considering this one is nothing special. Not a superstar.
Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara in Black 0.1 oz. sample size. Full-Size $24
I have nothing bad to say about this because it is my holy grail eyeliner. This mascara glides on so smooth, it gives me length & volume, it dries without crumbling, and lasts all day without raccoon eyes. This has been a staple in my routine for years and it’s a must-have. A full-Size would’ve been nice but I can always use a sample for my bag. I can’t say I was excited for this because I literally have 10 of these floating around. Benefit has gone crazy putting these samples in monthly subscriptions and at every beauty store counter. Definitely Superstar worthy but sampled-out (if that’s even a word). Sephora should have left his one out, especially since it was around long before 2015. This the OG superstar!
Touch In Sol Stretchex Stretch Lash Effect Mascara in black/Full-Size $22
I liked that this was a full-size mascara but, to be honest, I thought it looked cheaply made. I put it aside for a long time because, like I said, Benefit is my go-to brand for mascara (sorry I am such a mascara snob). I wish I would’ve tried it sooner because this took me by surprise. It gave the length its name suggests, its super dark in pigment, and no raccoon eyes! I won’t be giving up my Benefit, but it’s a good filler if I run out. I doubt I would purchase again because the price is a little steep for the quality. Not a superstar.
Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder Compact in Golden Nude 0.06 oz. Full-Size $40
This was one of the reasons I was really excited about this set. I don’t do the super shimmery highlighters so I am always on the look out for something subtle but effective. This came in the lightest shade available and it’s perfect for my olive/neutral skin. It’s buttery, glides on smooth, and easily blends out for the perfectly subtle highlight. It doesn’t sparkle or make me look shiny. I have been wearing this almost every day since I laid hands on it. I am dreading the day it runs out because $40 for a highlighter is insane! Superstar for sure!
Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Highlight/Full-Size $22
My initial thought was..really?! Another highlighter?!, but it was full-size and in an easy to use stick form so I got over it. I think the pink opalescent shade of this highlighter is perfect and subtle enough for me. It’s more shimmery than the LM. It’s so beautiful, the only downfall is that it can be difficult to blend out! I have tried several variations of foundation and brushes to get this to work. It seems to work best on top of powder foundation and blended with a sponge. If you don’t take your time to blend this one you could be left with a harsh highlight streak. It’s a superstar if you use the right tools and blend carefully.
Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Lounge/Full-Size $19
If there was one UD eyeshadow I could recommend this is it right here. The pigment is something that pictures/words can do no justice! You have to see what this is like in person but I will do my best to describe it. Lounge is a duo chrome pigment with a red/brown base and an emerald green/teal shift. The more you blend it out the more red/brown you will see. If you dab it or layer it you will see more of the emerald and teal. It also depends on which way the light hits it, that is what makes it difficult to photograph. I’ve had so many compliments and second looks when I wear Lounge. $19 for one eyeshadow is expensive but for a such a unique shade I feel like it’s worth it. Probably THE Superstar!
NARS Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow in Himalia/Full-Size $29
I thought this product alone would steal the show, how wrong I was!! NARS is known for quality packaging so of course this is a heavy-duty little compact and the shade Himalia is just beautiful to look at. I found myself just staring at this in a zombie like state. I expected it o be a little more buttery and less powders but it still glides on smooth and blends well. What I wasn’t expecting was such a low pigment pay-off. Himalia is a very light on the skin and with too much blending it would disappear. With wet application it looks more like it appears in the compact but still not as intense as I expected for the brand and the price. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a pretty shade and I know the product description says romantic to bold but it falls a little short on both. Most definitely NOT a superstar!
beautyblender the original/Full-Size $20
Well it’s the beautyblender and what can I really say that hasn’t already been said? Oh wait, I forgot…I hate it. lol. I’m sorry if I offend anyone, but the beautyblender is not my favorite blending sponge. I would’ve preferred if this kit had the beautyblender pro or something other than the original. I always have and always will think $20 is too expensive for a blending sponge. Not a superstar (I know you probably disagree and it’s okay!).
tarte The Sculptor Contouring Face Slenderizer in Park Ave Princess 0.06oz. Full-Size $24
This is a crayon type sculptor and will leave a very harsh line if not blended well. Park Ave Princess is my favorite shade from tarte so again I tested pretty diligently with this one. You must use a dense synthetic brush (like tartes bamboo contour brush) to blend this!! When you do you won’t regret it. Park Ave Princess is one of those beautifully subtle shades without all the sparkle and perfect for light and neutral. It does have a reddish base which is why it looks best on neutral skin. I did see a few bloggers had issues with the tip breaking but mine was ok and probably because I have always been afraid of contouring and tend to have a very light hand. This is also a sample size and that may contribute to the sturdiness, not sure. In my opinion this would be a superstar if it was compatible with more skin tones and blended a little easier but all-in-all I really like it.
tarte The Slenderizer Bamboo Contouring Brush travel-size. Full-Size $34
Keep in mind that, when this brush is purchased separately, it is double-sided with an angled brush on the other end. This is a very dense but soft synthetic brush that works perfectly with Sculptor Contour crayon (probably why they added both to the set). I absolutely LOVE this brush and I use it for anything that requires density like concealer, let’s not forget the cute bamboo handle! The travel size is perfect for me to carry in my bag for any touch ups throughout the day. I’m happy to say that the only way you will get this exact brush is by purchasing tarte’s Chiseling Charmers Deluxe Contour set for $24 at Sephora. This one is a Superstar for sure!
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in jet black Full-Size $22
If you haven’t read my review on these liners you can check it our here. Stila & KVD are my go-to liquid liners. I am, by no means, and expert at liquid mascara so it pretty much has to be super easy to use for me to like. Stila glides on smooth with enough time to layer and fix but once it’s set it’s locked in and not moving. I like my black liner to be as dark as possible and Stila is just that! The reason I prefer this over KVD is that it doesn’t dry out inside the tube. You can skip using it for a while with no worries of it drying out. I got so sick of wasting money on liquid liners until I found this. Definitely a superstar!
Lancome DRAMA LUQI-PENCIL Longwear Eyeliner Full-Size $23
Bottom line is it’s too much work for little pay-off. The plastic casing makes it impossible to sharpen and when it’s dull it is closer to gray than black. It is smudgeable for almost a whole minute which is god and bad. If you get it to set exactly how you want it then it sets it’s good for the whole day. Good for the waterline, tightline, lower lash, and smoking out the lid. There is no way to get a sharp cat eye with this because it’s just too soft and definitely NO layering because it will crumble. You have to be quick and not touch for at least 30 seconds. If you do manage to get the point sharpened enough to get super black pigment on you will only have a trouble when t’s time to remove it. Totally NOT worth the cash. Not a superstar!
I had so much fun playing with all of these products even though almost half weren’t really “superstar” material. The actual superstars of the group made up for the disappointments. I still feel that the it’s definitely worth the price and even saved me some money on the full sizes that I won’t have to repurchase….good reasoning right? haha!
Has anyone else tried any of these products? Any tips or tricks would be appreciated so GIVE ME SOME LIP!
