One Love Cleansing Sponge Review & GIVEAWAY!

I’ve read so many great new year resolutions and I never really thought about mine until another blogger recently suggested I show more of myself in my posts. I thought this was crazy at first because, as a Virgo, perfection is a major flaw of mine. I mean how can I talk about myself when I’m writing a review? I decided to look back at some of my posts and the common theme was mostly professional, always to the point, and somewhat lacking personality.

When I read a post, I like to know the person behind the blog which means I either need to include myself or be a hypocrite. I guess you figured out my resolution by now which is to allow myself to be more natural when writing and add more of my personality to my posts, Enough about me…..Just kidding but I do need to get on with the review.

I have been reading so much about the benefits of charcoal on the skin so I really wanted to check it out and I had the perfect opportunity offered to me by another blogger.

Elisabeth at Everything & Nothin’ was part of a multi-blogger holiday giveaway that I was lucky to win (still super shocked and excited btw). Thank you so much Elisabeth!! She is an amazing blogger so please go check her out.

Elisabeth gave me the option of choosing a few products from the Birchbox store and because she’s a sweetheart she added a few surprises too!! If you are interested in getting Birchbox you can sign up here and get your first box for $5. My first pick for the giveaway was One Love Organic’s Cleansing Sponge in Bamboo Charcoal Heart. Here is the description from One Love Organics:

“The Cleansing Sponge is made with 100-percent pure konjac plant fiber, prized for its ability to detoxify pores and smooth skin while buffing away dirt and makeup. Soft yet exfoliating, The Cleansing Sponge is ideal for everyday use on even the most sensitive skin.”

“Bamboo Charcoal Heart: Perfect for oily, combination and problematic skin”

Bamboo Charcoal Heart

When I opened this it reminded me of the beauty blender but more stiff. It was a lot smaller than I expected but the directions said to add and  it would double in size. Below is before and after rinsing with water. You can see that it did double in size and became very porous. It also has a little string attached and they suggest you ALWAYS hang to dry after use. It was also extremely soft and I my initial thought way this isn’t going to exfoliate and there is no way this will make my skin soft.

Let me tell you about my skin. I have combination skin with a super oily t-zone, multiple non-acne scars, and the occasional mild breakout.

The directions say to dampen the sponge with warm water until it expands to double the size then add your cleanser and gently massage the face in a circular motion.

Now I am going to tell you something super gross so if you’re eating….fair warning!

I have this hole on my forehead. Yes, I call it a hole because it’s deep. It’s a scar from chicken pox as a child. It’s so deep that it fills up with dirt, makeup, and any other environmental debris it can suck in. I never know what to do, should I let it fill up because then it’s smooth and easily covered or do I pull all that junk out and have a noticeably deep hole on my head? I do both and when I clean it out it’s at least 20 minutes with tweezers. You would not believe what comes out…..super gross!!

I had to tell you that story so you can understand the full extent of the magic this little sponge produces. For those that don’t know how activated charcoal works, it’s estimated that it can absorb 2 times its weight. While there isn’t any scientific evidence of its effectiveness on the skin, it does make sense that if we use it to remove impurities from water that it could work well on skin impurities.

After I soaked the sponge, I added my facial cleanser and went to work in a circular motion for about a minute and rinsed. I was fascinated that my hole was empty and I mean completely cleared of debris. No more painful tweezer work……YES!! All that was promised was true. My face was super soft and felt amazingly clean. This is amazingly soft and great for scrubbing those waterproof mascaras and eyeliners.

Bottom Line: I would give this sponge a 10/10 rating. It is super soft for even the extremely sensitive skin types, it is the perfect shape with a convenient string for hang-drying, and has absolutely no odor. Bamboo Charcoal Heart does everything it claims; exfoliates, buffs away dirt and makeup, and detoxifies pores.

One Love Organic has three sponge options, in addition to the Bamboo Charcoal Heart they also have the Original Heart (for all skin types) and a Rose Clay Heart (for sensitive/mature skin).

I encourage everyone on the face of the planet to give this cute heart-shaped sponge a sponge a try. Birchbox is currently sold out but you can get on the waitlist. I was so excited about this that I immediately ordered another one to giveaway to one lucky reader!!!
